What are some things that make you sad?

A 10-year-old girl once came to me and asked, “Why are some people dark and ugly?”

Her question shocked me. Before I could respond, she added, “Why am I dark?”

I didn’t want to answer right away, so I asked her, “What do you think?”

She quickly replied, “God doesn’t love us, and that’s why He made us like this.” Her words were filled with sadness.

Hearing this broke my heart. I tried to distract her by saying, “It’s melanin that determines our skin color. Can you say the word, melanin?”

She got curious about the word, and her focus shifted to learning what melanin is.

But her question stayed with me.

It makes me sad that we still struggle to accept and appreciate the diversity in our skin colors.

It makes me sad that we haven’t created a world where children’s self-esteem isn’t hurt by racism.

It makes me sad that we don’t see beauty beyond skin color.

It makes me sad that we fail to recognize the beauty in all skin tones and textures.

It makes me sad that, despite our education, many of us don’t understand the science behind skin color.

And it makes me especially sad that, even today, prejudice and bias against darker skin still exist.
