Why did the friendship between Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli get so strained? Who's to be held responsible for it?

I find this “friendship” between Sachin and Vinod a bit unnatural.

Vinod always attends Sachin’s events, but I’ve rarely, if ever, seen pictures of Sachin attending Vinod’s events, especially after 2013.

They came from completely different backgrounds, and their only real connection was cricket.

Think about it—how many school friends do you stay close to in college? And how many do you keep in touch with once you start working?

Sachin and Vinod had very different personalities:

  • Sachin was grounded and modest, thanks to his elder brother, Ajit. He rarely drank and preferred watching movies in his room over going to nightclubs.
  • Vinod, on the other hand, let fame go to his head. He drank a lot, partied, and his behavior gave his coaches, Wadekar and Bishen Bedi, plenty of headaches.

Talent-wise, Vinod didn’t match up. He performed well in Indian conditions against bowlers like Jarvis, Graeme Hick, and Lewis but struggled against top players like Walsh. Despite being given a long run from 1996 to 2000 (26 games), he only managed to score two fifties.

Once they stopped playing together, and with Sachin busy touring and playing cricket most of the time, it’s no surprise they drifted apart.

I’ve noticed Vinod often talks about Sachin, but Sachin rarely, if ever, talks about Vinod. The media tends to hype up their “friendship” and “brotherhood” to make it sound dramatic and filmy.

In reality, I think they were just two school friends who naturally drifted apart over time.
