When I first saw it, my boyfriend at the time was a Royal Marine on his second tour in Afghanistan.

We’d been together for a couple of years, and I was completely in love with him. I missed him terribly and was frustrated by how little we could talk. I wrote to him often, but he wrote back less frequently and called whenever he could. At 19, I was impatient, bored without him, and looking forward to a holiday we had planned for when he returned.

Then I saw this picture—a woman around my age with a husband not much older than mine—and my perspective shifted instantly.

I knew his job was dangerous, but he had shielded me from the details, and I was too naive to fully understand. I started Googling what the marines were doing and came across phrases like "heavily engaged" and "Taliban stronghold."

Suddenly, my complaints felt trivial. I felt guilty for whining to him while he was in such a dangerous situation. I was grateful he listened to me—through Skype, letters—and never made me feel bad about it.

Maybe he appreciated the distraction, but looking back, I’m a bit embarrassed by how unaware I was at the time.
