What is something you learned very late in life, but wish you knew much earlier?

Dave was someone I used to see as “successful.”

But my idea of success changed completely after the 2008 financial crisis, when Dave lost everything.

He lived a flashy, extravagant life that made everyone jealous.

  • He drove a luxury Mercedes—I wanted one too.
  • He had a stunning office—I wanted that too.
  • He traveled in luxury—I envied that.
  • He owned an impressive home—I wanted the same.

But when the crisis hit and Dave lost his job, his huge debts caused his entire life to fall apart. His “millionaire” lifestyle was like a balloon—once his income stopped, it burst.

The stress destroyed his health, leading to diabetes and depression. He never recovered.

To answer your question: What’s something I learned late in life but wish I had known earlier?

I used to chase financial success and stressed over trying to have a life like Dave’s. I even made some bad decisions because of it.

My father always told me, “Success in life is not a race. Success is living wisely.” But for years, I ignored his advice because I wanted to live like Dave.

Watching Dave’s downfall changed everything for me. I finally understood my father’s wisdom:

  • Dave’s life was hollow and unrealistic. My dad taught me to make wise decisions every day.
  • Dave lived to impress others. My dad taught me to live with integrity.
  • Dave burned through everything he earned and never planned for the future. My dad showed me the importance of investing in tomorrow.

Now, I don’t race for success. Instead, I treat each day as an investment, like building up compound interest.
