Is civil service good for a lazy person? I want a peaceful, stress-free life with very less work. Is the IAS or IRS good for it?
When I was a young officer, I had a Commissioner who usually arrived at the office around 11:00 AM and left early. Even when he was there, he spent most of his time chatting with junior officers instead of doing his actual work, which he would finish in an hour or so.
He eventually rose to the top of the department and became the Chairman of the Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC).
When I was posted in Chennai, there was an IAS officer from the 1992 batch who wasn’t on good terms with the government at the time and was given a low-profile posting. He told me that he only worked for about half an hour a day. To pass the time, he would bring books to the office and read.
A few years ago, there was an IG-rank IPS officer named D K Panda, who saw himself as a special person and used to go to the office fully made-up. Despite this, he kept getting promoted on time.
Getting into civil services is extremely tough, with a rejection rate worse than 499 out of 500. However, once you are in, life becomes easier. You are guaranteed time-bound promotions based on seniority, regardless of how well you perform.
This doesn’t mean all civil servants are lazy—many work more than 12 hours a day. But for many, working hard is a choice, not a requirement.
As a result, most civil servants work as little as they can, especially if they are honest or in sidelined positions. They have nothing to gain by working hard, and nothing to lose by being lazy.
Recently, Mr. Ashok Khemka, a senior IAS officer from Haryana, even wrote a letter to the Chief Minister saying, "My annual salary is Rs 40 lakh, I work one hour a week."
Can you think of any other job that offers such high salaries, perks, pension, facilities, and promotions with so little work?
