Why are people hating on Naomi Scott for being Princess Jasmine?
In simple terms, some people are upset because they wanted a Middle Eastern actress for the role, but a half-English, half-Indian actress was cast instead.
Normally, I would criticize poor movie decisions, but in this case, Disney made the right choice. The fictional Sultanate of Agrabah from the original cartoon isn’t actually in the Middle East.
You won’t find a palace like Sultan Hamed II Bobolonius’s (yes, that’s his full name) in the Middle East (though it might be found in Oman). But do you know where you can find something similar? In India.
The Taj Mahal, located in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, is a famous mausoleum built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan for his wife Mumtaz Mahal in 1632. The Mughals were Sunni Muslims from present-day Uzbekistan who took control of India in the 16th century and ruled until the British took over in 1857.
And guess what else comes from India? Tigers.
As for the clothes, they’re inspired by Ottoman Turkish fashion, from a completely different part of the Islamic world.
The best part? The original Aladdin story, from the Arabian Nights, was actually set in China when it was told by Sultana Scheherazade in a French translation from the 1700s.
